In my last wine review I referred to the wines body. This is part of the palate and refers to the weight of the wine in the mouth.
It is independent of the flavour of the wine as you can have a very flavourful wine with a light body, Marlborough Savignon Blanc is a good example of this.
Image drinking a glass of water as opposed to glass of clear apple juice. The apple juice feels heavier in the mouth i.e. has more weight, and is thus considered to have more body. In wine there are a lot of components that make up body including sugar and alcohol levels, the amount acid and tannin most of which you can’t see.
Be aware that the colour of the wine is independent of the body i.e. deeper coloured wines don’t necessarily have more body.
So the next time you put some wine in your mouth swirl it around a few times and have a think about the weight of it compared to other wines you have tried. Enjoy.
